Apply for a Home

Being chosen for a Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity home is an exciting adventure. Though we are not set up to provide emergency housing we are a long term solution. Approximately, once a year we hold open Application Meetings where you can hear information about the application and Family Selection process in addition to the type and quality of the homes built. The next Application Meeting will be in the spring of 2011. As we get closer to 2011 look for announcement of date, time and place.

Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity looks at three criteria when choosing families:

1. Need
You will be considered for a Habitat home if your present housing is not adequate, and if you are unable to obtain adequate housing through conventional means. Lack of adequate housing may include problems with the present structure; water, electrical or sewage service problems; heating system and weatherization issues; or failure to meet city property maintenance standards. Also taken into consideration are the number, the ages, and the gender of children and family members who will be living in the home. In addition, the percentage of your monthly income going towards housing helps to determine need.

2. Ability to Pay
Habitat for Humanity is not a hand out but a hand up. You will receive a mortgage and will be expected to pay back on the home. The mortgage will be a zero percent, no interest mortgage. The total price will be based on our cost to build your home (which is built with mostly all volunteer labor) and your income and ability to pay. You must demonstrate that you have shown some financial stability in the past and that you understand the importance of making your mortgage payments on time. You will be required to openly and fully discuss your financial situation with Habitat personnel.

3. Willingness to Partner

At Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity we consider our relationships with our families a partnership. We work together to provide for each others needs. We want to build homes for people in need and to that end we need to raise money and awareness of our program. As a selected family you will be asked to speak with media and/or at church worship services as well as fund raising and fund awareness events. You must also demonstrate a willingness to put in up to 500 “sweat-equity” hours working on Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity projects.

Below please see our Income Guidelines for obtaining a Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity home. Your total income should fall within these guidelines of 30% to 50% of AMI (Area Median Income) in order to be considered to be a partnering family.

We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation, or sources of income.
