The Latham Family

Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity is proud to announce its new partnership with the Latham Family. Sunshine Latham applied for a Habitat home fall 2008, and said, "I looked it up online to see what it was all about and knew that it was something I had to be a part of, even if I wasn't chosen."

Sunshine has spent most of her life in Aurora, and is raising her son Demetrius (age 13), daugther Shalyce (age 11), and son Jalen (age 5), while working full-time as a staffing coordinator. The family currently resides in a three bedroom apartment in Aurora; however, all three children share a room due to poor insulation in the third room. Shalyce said she can't wait to pick out the carpet color and decorations for her room (she wants an ocean theme).

Sunshine told Habitat that her father used to "flip" houses when she was growing up, so she understands the work it will take to complete her Sweat Equity hours and help build her own home, as well as take part in other Habitat builds. The new house will be a rehab of a home built by Habitat over ten years ago, and will be completed more quickly than other projects. Sunshine started her Sweat Equity hours by attending recent home dedication ceremonies, and has created a plan with Habitat to continue her hours after her house is complete. Sunshine told Habitat the most important part of receiving her house is being able to provide stability; "I want a home for my children, a place where they will have wonderful memories and can always come back to." Sunshine says she enjoys helping others and is always willing to learn, which will make her and her family a wonderful asset to the Habitat family in the future.
